1937年11月间，日军占领上海后，又攻占杭州、苏州，国家的对外运输线几近封锁。仅存的国际运输通道滇越铁路有随时被日寇炸毁断路的危险。修建一条新的国际运输通道“滇缅公路”成了国家战争物资运输保障的重中之重。 随校迁往大后方昆明的学子王俊荣参加国民政府临时组建的筑路队。经过简单培训，被派往“滇缅公路”怒江两岸雷公山和地母山动员当地百姓修路。 怒江两岸的雷公山和地母山是当地原住民族世世代代赖以生存之地，被他们视为神山。山上有供奉山神的神庙、有宗族祠堂、有世代祖先的坟冢，人们无法接受在“神山”上开凿、爆破，修筑一条与自己无关的路。于是，整寨的寨民开始策划、捉弄筑路员王俊荣，希望他早日离开，将路修在别处。 正当寨民们采取种种手段迫使王俊荣离开他们心目中的“神山”，而王俊荣又异常固执地非要在此筑路的僵持时刻，县民政科送来了阵亡通知书和抚恤金，雷公山寨和地母山...。Flung together at a New Year’s Eve party, Minnie (Cookson) and Quinn (Laviscount) quickly realize they share a connection- they were born on New Year’s Day of the same year, in the same London hospital, one minute apart.
